These trials will highlight technologies using new 5G radio protocols in mmWave spectrum. The firms have planned to demonstrate increased network capacity and multi GB data rates. High frequency bands will be utilized for this task. The three partners plan to accelerate commercial deployment in 28 GHz and 39 GHz bands. These frequency bands will be set by US regulator about 5G usage.

Qualcomm, Ericsson & AT&T Collaborates on 5G Wireless Field Trials

The companies will conduct field trials and tests in US, based on protocols developed by technical standards body the 3GPP. Tests will be conducted by using AT&T spectrum whereas equipment for the tests will be provided by Qualcomm and Ericson. The companies said that this is a very big step towards the development of of infrastructure including virtual reality, augmented reality and cloud services. Ericsson SVP Ulf Ewaldsson said: Tom Keathley, AT&T’s SVP added: The collaboration with AT&T is Ericsson and Qualcomm’s second step towards 3GPP New Radio specifications in following week. In December the firms also revealed plans to initiate interoperability and field trials of 5G New Radio standards with SK Telecom in South Korea in the back-half of 2017.
